In this way the earth will not be able maintain a proper ecological balance and would snap under pressure leading to chaos and scarcity.

Defining Ecological Sustainability

The word sustainability is a perception which promotes the idea of equality between individuals of today and the generations of tomorrow. The main focus of ecological sustainability lies in ways that would create a proper balance between our environmental, social and economic requirements without over pressurising the earths capacity. The needs of today should be handled in such a way that the generations of tomorrow also get their share of resources and can lead a healthy and contented way of life.
The current rate of consumption of natural resource by the humans and the speed of waste production is ecologically unsustainable. A balance has to be struck to ensure that humans do not take resources in such large amounts from the earth which it cannot replenish.

There is a way of measuring how much pressure do individuals and countries put on the Earth. It is called the ecological footprint. Through an ecological footprint the impact of used resources and waste production of an individual, a business or a country can be calculated. Every individual living on the Earth has an ecological footprint. Population of urban areas usually have a greater ecological footprint as compared to people who live in rural areas. Similarly developed usually leave larger ecological footprints as compared to the developing nations. Businesses have often been blamed for a greater share of unsustainable development. To take correctional steps the corporate in todays world have designed many systems and practices through which they contribute towards sustainable growth.

Corporate sustainability

Corporate sustainability is often used as a term which is synonymous to or stands in relation with terms like corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Creating a brand-new icon featuring the familiar ‘aqua’ effect is easier than you think – if you have proper tools. To draw an icon from scratch, a professional, lightweight and easy icon editor such as IconLover 5 is all you really need.

For an instance, let us draw an aqua-style icon for “Add”, a glass ball with a “plus” sign inside. To start, you’ll need to draw a circle of a certain color. Select the color you want from the Color properties menu. By the way, you can always save a color by adding it to Custom Colors; this comes very handy if you need to draw a matching set of icons.

Using the Transparency bar or one of the Transparency presets, set your new image’s transparency. For this tutorial, the ball will be fully opaque. In the same way, you can specify background color; for simplicity’s sake, we’ll leave the background transparent for now.

To draw a circle of selected color, select the Filled Ellipse tool by clicking the Filled Ellipse button in the Tools menu, which is on the left of the drawing area. With your left mouse button down, move the mouse cursor within the drawing area to create an ellipse. The ellipse changes its size as you move the mouse. To create an ideal circle, hold Shift while drawing. That’s it, you have just painted a circle!

In order for our flat circle to start looking like a crystal ball, we’ll need to apply some special effects. There are many of them built into IconLover! You can add shadows, gradients, transparency channels, and of course, the renowned ‘glass reflection’ look employed by the aqua effect.

To draw an icon matching Apple’s Aqua style, you’ll need to draw a reflection and a shadow to the circle. This can be managed quite easily by simply selecting Aqua from the Effects menu. Just keep all sliders at their current positions for now, and you’ll get a beautiful shiny sphere as a result.

Now let’s add an artist’s touch and make your icon truly unique. Go back to that Aqua dialog and have a look at the settings. There are multiple settings available to adjust, allowing you to design something never seen before. Go ahead and move the sliders to see how your icon can look!

As a final touch, let’s add some volume to your new icon. While glowing and shiny, it still looks more like a button rather than a crystal ball. Let’s fix that by throwing a drop-down shadow! To add a shadow effect to your icon, click “Drop shadow” from the Effects menu. You can use the defaults, or tweak the values around by getting a flat button, a lens, or a ball. It all depends on the size of the shadow, its distance from the subject, and the angle at which it falls to the surface.

To add the ‘plus’ sign into the image, click on the Text tool icon in the left Tools menu or press “T” to invoke the text properties window. Make sure the “Image transparency” box is selected. This box means that your text will not be transparent, only the area around it will be. Tweaking the “Use semi-transparency” setting gets your text the same level of transparency your primary color has. Type “+”, and you’ll get the ‘plus’ sign embedded into the ball.

That’s it! You’ve just designed a crystal ball that matches the famous Aqua style! All you needed was a professional icon editor, IconLover 5, a few clicks and a few minutes of your time. Easy!

Before you think about composition, focus on your subject, Find an aspect of it that you like. Maybe you like the look of an entire table or just the knotted grain. Whatever your focus, be sure to place that prominently on your paper. And then imagine your 2D object has weight like its 3D counterpart does in reality. And imagine that color and shadow have weight too. White space is weightless.

1.Unbalanced
Compositions can be unbalanced. For example, if you drew a table in the bottom left corner of a piece of paper, its weight would appear to drag that corner down. If you then stuck a pin in the center of this drawing and stuck it to the wall, the table would pull on the paper so much the paper would spin and wind up pointing table down. And then if you spun the paper like a pinwheel, it would wobble.
Unbalanced compositions are used to express good and bad strong feelings. Your table, for example, looks lonely.

2.Balanced
Compositions can be balanced. For example, if you added an equal amount of shading to the top right of your drawing from the previous example, your drawing would appear to even out. You could also add object(s). If you then spun your drawing on a pin like above, it would spin evenly and even wind up level when it stopped spinning.
Balanced compositions are used to express comfortable feelings. Now your table looks more at home.

EXERCISE – Look at a group of objects like leaves on a tree or bricks in a wall, in real life or in a photo. Focus on only a few of the objects that catch your eye, ones that you like. Draw them prominently on your paper in either a balanced or an unbalanced composition. Try following the shading rules described in my “shading” lesson.
